New Delhi: A medium-intensity earthquake struck Srinagar at 5:44 in the morning today. No casualties have been reported.

The monitoring agency United States Geological Survey or USGS recorded the quake's intensity at 4.50 on the Richter scale, a yardstick used to check an earthquake's strength.

The USGS pinpointed the epicentre or the location where the earthquake started to Sumbal in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, at a depth of 150 kilometres in the Earth's crust.

Geologists say Jammu and Kashmir lies in a region where seismic activities, or vibrations in the Earth's crust, are high.

More details are awaited.
