Mumbai: Meenakshi Jaiswal, former president of Maharashtra Child Rights Protection Committee, was found dead in her apartment today in Kharghar in Raigad district near Navi Mumbai.

Her body was discovered when her family doctor came to visit her and found her lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit and two fingers chopped off. Ms Jaiswal's mangalsutra was also missing.

Ms Jaiswal's husband is a magistrate in Nashik district.

The police say, a man named Vinayak Chavan, who used to do odd jobs for her and occasionally drive her car is behind the crime and that he has been arrested.

According to the police, the murder probably took place between 11 pm and midnight on Friday.

The accused has reportedly ransacked her apartment and took away whatever valuables they could find.

Additional Commissioner of Police Fateh Singh Patil told reporters, "We investigated and found out who was behind this crime. We took him into custody and on interrogation he admitted to the crime. He informed us about Maninder Singh Bajwa, a resident of Kharghar and another accused. These two accused have murdered Jaiswal. They have also committed theft in her house."

"We have arrested the accused and taken them into custody. Both have admitted to their crime. They will be produced in court tomorrow. After that we will interrogate them and recover the property, weapons to gather evidence and also prove their motive. One accused is on the run and we are confident we will arrest him soon," Mr Patil said.
