Meerut: Junior cricketer shot dead

Meerut: Two people including junior cricket player Gagandeep Singh were shot dead by unknown assailants after firing broke out in Meerut on Friday night. The other person who was killed was a shopkeeper.

Gagandeep was an under 22 player from Kanpur and had come to Meerut to participate in an upcoming cricketing tournament.

The authorities are investigating the cause for the firing. One Rahul Chowdhary has been arrested on charges of murder. He is the son of a policewoman. The police are looking for two more suspects.

Prabal Pratap Singh, Superintendent of Police, Meerut city, says, "He had come here to play in the C K Naidu tournament, and he was staying at the Crystal Palace Hotel. The incident occurred right in front of the hotel. He had gone over to have some kebabs, that's when he was shot."

"We came to know only through the media and the press. Then we sent three people to Kanpur to find out what had happened. We'll come to know only when they return. The papers say that he had been shot by some miscreants, we'll know the truth when they (the three people) come back," says Gagandeep's relative from Kanpur.
