Delhi girl M Gayatri's phone hasn't stopped ringing since morning. What started as a normal day, turned extraordinary after her school called and told her she had scored a whopping 99.2% -- making her the topper in the Central Board of Secondary Education, or CBSE, Class XII examinations.
A commerce student of New Green Fields School Saket, Gayatri scored a perfect 100% in Mathematics, Business Studies and Accounts and a 98% in both English and Economics. Her total marks - 496 out of 500.
Students say the Maths paper this year was the toughest in a decade. But Gayatri, who focused on HOTS (High Order Thinking Skills), says the paper was good and stimulated the mind to think out-of-the-box.
"We expected her to score at least 95%, but this is superb," said her father S Mohan, a government official. "This is a proud moment," added her mother Laxmi Mohan, a banker. Gayatri is their only child.
The aspiring Chartered Accountant, however, insists that she did not study more than six hours a day. Studying regularly and consistently is the key, she says.
Her parents attribute her success to the constant guidance from her teachers.
Among the top three this year, there is another girl - Mythili Mishra of Amity School, Noida. She has tied for the second place with Thiruvananthapuram's B Arjun, who is from Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom. Both Mythili and Arjun have scored 495 out of 500.
