A daughter was born today to BJP law-maker Varun Gandhi, the son of union minister Maneka Gandhi, and his wife Yamini.
The baby, named Anasuya, is the third great-grandchild of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Varun's older cousin Priyanka has two children.
Mr Gandhi said in a short announcement, "It is with the deepest joy that I share that Yamini and I have been blessed with a beautiful daughter. One child was born this afternoon in New Delhi."
"My family feels truly glad and grateful for this precious gift of a girl. We have named her Anasuya."
Varun Gandhi, 34, is the son of Indira Gandhi's younger son, Sanjay. He recently won the general elections from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, adjacent to the Lok Sabha constituency of his cousin Rahul Gandhi, who is the vice-president of the Congress.
Maneka Gandhi and Varun have long been estranged from the Nehru-Gandhi political clan that has headed the Congress for decades. Varun's aunt Sonia Gandhi is the president of the Congress
Sanjay Gandhi died in 1980, when Varun was three months old. Maneka and Varun Gandhi joined the BJP in 2004, though Mrs Gandhi had supported the BJP-led Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and even served as a central minister before that.
On Saturday, Varun Gandhi was removed from the post of BJP general secretary.
