Tie-Up With BJP To Continue, But No Deadline on Government Formation: PDP

PDP leaders arrive at Mehbooba Mufti's residence to discuss future course of action.

Srinagar: The alliance with the BJP will continue in Jammu and Kashmir, but there is no deadline on government formation, said the People's Democratic Party, which had been ruling the state for the last 10 months in alliance with the BJP. The final call, the party said, will be taken later by its chief Mehbooba Mufti.

"We all want to take Mufti Sahab's dream ahead mainly on India and Pakistan relations," said Naeem Akhtar, senior leader of the party after a five-hour meeting with Mehbooba Mufti.

"Mehbooba Mufti welcomes the stand of Modiji's meeting Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan... she will take a decision," he added.

The statement came amid the uncertainty over government formation in the state, which is currently under Governor's Rule following the death of chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7.

Ms Mufti, who was expected to succeed her father, had been disinclined to take oath. There were reports that she was upset with alliance partner BJP for the Centre's tardiness over the economic package and flood relief for the state.

Earlier, the party has said that BJP and central government should first implement some key  points  of agenda of alliance.

But today, party said there are no fresh demands -- the party only wants that the agenda alliance worked out with Mufti be implemented in good faith.

Speculations over a possible political realignment in the state had grown after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi met Ms Mufti and National Conference President Farooq Abdullah spoke of discussing the matter if he received an offer of alliance from the BJP.

In the 87-member Assembly, BJP has 25 lawmakers while NC has 15. The PDP has 28 seats.

The alliance between the two ideologically opposite parties had been crafted by Mufti after the split verdict of the state I the assembly elections held last year. But the 10-month partnership had been uneasy following the differences between the two parties on various governance issues.
