Midnight drama in Uttar Pradesh Assembly: SP, RLD MLAs dragged out

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh assembly witnessed late night drama after Samajwadi Party (SP) and RLD MLAs were forced out from the floor of the House by marshals while staging a dharna.

It all began when the Opposition MLAs from the SP and RLD started protesting against the abrupt sine-die adjournment of the UP assembly over a contentious bill, just eight days before the scheduled completion of the Budget session.

The agitated MLAs refused to move out of the Assembly after business hours and dared the marshals.

After a nearly 12-hour protest, marshals and plain-clothed policemen stormed into the assembly at 1 am and forcefully removed the legislators from the floor of the House.

The MLAs though claimed that they were targeted by goons.

"Those men who dragged us out were drunken criminals. They were not marshals, we were attacked by criminals", Shivpal Yadabv, Leader of Opposition said.

The legislators alleged that several important bills were passed without a debate on the floor of the House and slammed the Mayawati government for running the Assembly in an autocratic fashion.

Azam Khan, General Secretary, SP said, "This is murder of democracy."
