Militants attack villages in Assam

Guwahati: Two persons have been killed and one injured after suspected militants opened fire in Saiding Basti under Mahur police station in a Dimasa village in Assam. The militants later set the village on fire.

On Friday, in a similar incident on an attack on a Dimasa village in N C Hills, 17 houses were destroyed and one person injured.

Assam's North Cachar Hills district has been witnessing terrorist violence almost everyday, yet the government agencies involved seems little concerned.

Hours after militants set the Dimasa village on fire residents are trying to salvage whatever is left - a trunk and a damaged sewing machine.

Caught unawares the villagers fled after armed men opened fire early Friday morning and when they returned they found that almost the entire Jorai Basti was gutted.

"The Naga army came down and started firing on us," said a villager.

N C Hills has been on the boil for months now with the DHD(J) on a terror run on one hand and rising ethnic clashes between the Dimasas and the Nagas.

In 2009 alone, there have been 41 incidents of violence including six attacks on railways, 11 security personnel have been killed and 3 villages set on fire.

"As on date it is bad but the situation will improve. All required efforts are being made by all agencies," said BSF DIG J C Pandey.

But surely the efforts aren't good enough.
