Delhi/Srinagar:
Two militants who entered a paramilitary camp in Srinagar dressed in cricket uniforms and killed five jawans were most likely from Pakistan, said Home Secretary RK Singh.
The militants were shot dead. "Prima facie, the terrorists appear to be from across the border and were Pakistani nationals ," Mr Singh told reporters.
Six jawans who were injured are in hospital and not in critical condition. Three civilians were also injured in the attack.
The ambush took place this morning at the scene in the Bemina area of Srinagar which is home to a camp for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and a police-run school, which was closed today.
The attack was carried out on an open field where children and jawans were playing cricket, police said. Sources said the terrorists entered the complex wearing white cricket uniforms and carrying what looked like a sports bag, from which they pulled out automatic rifles and opened fire.
Kashmir has been tense since the execution in February of Afzal Guru, who belonged to Sopore in the Kashmir Valley. He had been convicted for assisting the deadly 2001 attack on parliament.
Attacks in Srinagar have become rare in recent years, with the last major incident in October when gunmen attacked a popular hotel, killing a bellboy and leaving at least two other people injured.
Afzal Guru's family received a letter informing them of his execution two days after he was hanged and buried in a top-secret operation at Delhi's Tihar Jail. There have been large protests in Kashmir both against his hanging, and demanding that his body be returned to his family, which has been rejected by the government.
