New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said ministries should refrain from getting over-involved in the internal matters of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi as it hampers the institution's growth.

"For its better functioning, the ministries should abstain from getting over-involved in its internal matters. The government needs to support hospitals and should not get into the micro management of the institutions," he said at the 43rd convocation of AIIMS.

A total of 552 students who completed various courses at India's premiere health institute, including Masters in medicine and surgery, received their degrees. Health Minister JP Nadda was also present at the event.

Mr Jaitley said the progress of any health institute should be left to its professionals.

"Institutes like AIIMS have got their own challenges, including providing talented doctors to other hospitals of the country among several other... In such situations, everyone should support the institution," he said.

Mr Jaitley, who also awarded senior doctors with life-time achievement awards, said the government was planning to expand AIIMS but availability of land issues were the major hurdles.

The minister suggested review of policies to create more hospitals - both private and public - in the country.
