New Delhi: In what appears to be a major security breach, a minor explosion occurred outside the High Court in Delhi today. No casualties, however, have been reported yet.
The explosion took place at around 1:30 pm near a silver Ford Figo car parked outside the court in the lawyers' parking area.
The bomb, made of crude explosives and placed in a black cloth bag, went off damaging the bonnet of the car.
Delhi Police Special Commissioner (Law and Order) Dharmendra Kumar said the blast was caused by a low-intensity explosive in which no one was injured.
"It was not a life-threatening blast...It was a small blast...The explosion took place in a small plastic bag," he said.
The police have now confirmed that the explosion was not an accident but was deliberately triggered .
The car with registration number DL4C AF 7935 reportedly belongs to a lawyer.
After the explosion, the bonnet of the car was found open and a foam-like substance could be seen around it.
The explosion spot is very close to the court cafeteria. However, the glass windows of the cafeteria are said to be intact as this was a low-intensity explosion.
Personnel of the Delhi Police's Special Cell, anti-terror unit and Bomb Detection and Disposal Unit were immediately rushed to the site along with four fire tenders.
The bag found at site of the explosion is being examined.
Security personnel have cordoned off the area.
According to sources, an alert has been sounded across the national capital and a search is on for unclaimed objects.
Sources also say that all police stations have been asked to get encroachments removed in the city.
