Mistaken for militants, armyman killed by troops

Srinagar: In a tragic incident in Jammu and Kashmir, one armyjawan was killed and three others injured after troops of another Army unit mistook them for fleeing militants and opened fire. The shooting took place in the Budgam district on the outskirts of Srinagar.

The Army had set up a vehicle check post at Chattergam chowk, 20 kilometres from Srinagar, in Chadoora area of Budgam, following information about the movement of militants through the area, sources said.

Sources said that troops of 53 Rashtriya Rifles opened fire on a Tata Sumo which was carrying armymen from the 35 Rashtriya Rifles in civilian clothing, when it did not stop at the check point.

Jawan Ghulam Ahmad Shaikh died in the shooting.

The injured have been shifted to 92 base hospital, where the condition of one jawan is stated to critical.

A senior police official said a team has been sent to the spot to investigate into the incident.
