New Delhi: Public anger spilled over on the streets of Delhi, and at the receiving end was the police. Mobs virtually laid siege to a police station in Inderpuri after a woman alleged that she was raped by five policemen.
"One by one they came in and raped me," she said.
The woman claimed the police came looking for her husband, a bookie who wasn't at home. So they brought her to the police station where she was allegedly raped. The police, however, deny the charge.
"We did not bring her to the police station. But we have given the case to the Crime Branch to investigate so as to maintain impartiality," said Kannan Jagadeeshan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West).
Meanwhile, S K Sharma, the CMO at RML Hospital said that initial examination does not show any external injury marks on the woman.
The police station in-charge has been transferred and a detailed forensic test ordered. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was quick to condemn the incident.
"It's a shameful act. I have asked the Women's Commission to look into it," she said.
Some police sources point to inconsistencies in the victim's version, but while the police have promised a speedy inquiry the real worry is that mob fury may once again hit the streets.
