Dhaka:
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today marked his arrival in Bangladesh by paying homage at the National Martyrs' Memorial.
"Remembering the sacrifice of the Liberation Struggle. PM @narendramodi at the National Martyrs' Memorial," Vikas Swarup, spokesperson for the external affairs ministry, tweeted.
"Foundation Stone for Jatiyo Smriti Shoudho was laid by Bangabandhu himself. Design was chosen from various entries obtained in a competition," PM Modi tweeted.
PM Modi arrived earlier in the day at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in a special Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, IAF Rajdoot. He was received, in a break from protocol, by his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina.
He was accorded a ceremonial welcome, after which he inspected a guard of honour.
