New Delhi: Mohan Parasaran has been appointed as the new Solicitor General of India following the resignation of senior advocate Rohinton Nariman from the post earlier this week.
"I have given my consent for the post of SG," he told PTI. "Formal notification is yet to be out," he said. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) is yet to meet and clear the move.
Mr Parasaran, who is currently the Additional Solicitor General, is a senior advocate of the Supreme Court and son of former Attorney General K Parasaran. He was appointed ASG by the first UPA government in July 2004.
When asked about his priority as the second senior most law officer, Mr Parasaran, said "We have to be responsive to the present needs of the society."
He said matters relating to public interest would be his priority.
Rohinton Nariman resigned as Solicitor General on February 4, 18 months after his appointment. Though he has not given any reason for quitting his post, there were speculations that his differences with the Law Ministry led to his resignation.
The Solicitor General appears on behalf of, and advises, the union government on various cases.
