More tourists opting for visa on arrival in India

New Delhi: The number of foreign tourists opting for visa on arrival (VoA) rose by over 27 percent from January-September this year compared to the same period last year, an official said in New Delhi on Friday.

A total number of 10,816 VoAs were issued this year as compared to 8,505 VoAs during the corresponding period of 2011 - a growth of 27.2 percent, a Tourism Ministry official said.

In order to attract more foreign tourists to India, the government in 2010 launched a VoA scheme for countries like Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore.

In 2011, the scheme was extended to accommodate six more countries - Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos and Myanmar.
