Congress and BJP members on Monday clashed in the Rajya Sabha over reports of virginity test done on girls, before their marriage under a scheme in Madhya Pradesh.
BJP members were up on their feet during Zero Hour when Santosh Bagrodia (Congress) raised the issue of a virginity test done by the Madhya Pradesh government on June 26, when 151 girls were about to be married under the Mukhya Mantri Kanyadan Yojana.
Complimenting the state government for the 'noble' scheme, Bagrodia said it was unfortunate that the girls were asked to "test for virginity" before their marriage, amidst "shame, shame" cries from his party colleagues.
Several BJP members voiced objections to the issue being raised in the House - based only on newspaper reports - and despite the denial by the state government.
