MPs should not give themselves raises, says Left

New Delhi: CPM on Thursday said it will oppose a proposal to increase the salaries of MPs as Parliamentarians themselves deciding on their pay hike was "wrong".

"We will oppose it and that is why we are not in that Committee. We did not deliberately go into that Committee because we think that MPs themselves deciding on their salary is not correct... If we sit and decide on our salaries, this would be wrong," CPM Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury told reporters here.

The Left leader was asked to comment on reports suggesting that a Committee of MPs had proposed hike in their pay to bring it at par of Secretary-rank officials, who get Rs 80,000 per month as salary.

Asked why was CPM opposing salary hike for MPs when Secretaries in the Government were getting more, he said, "We should find out ways of fixing our salaries.

"Secretaries don't sit and decide on their own salaries that how much should they get. Then why should MPs do that. We have been saying from day one that this issue should be decided in a systematic way," he said.
