New Delhi: Mulayam Singh Yaav, veteran politician and Samajwadi Party founder, died today at a hospital in Gurugram after prolonged illness. The 82-year-old was in the hospital since August and was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Gurugram-based Medanta Hospital on October 2.
Uttar Pradesh will observe three days of state mourning for the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, condoling Yadav's death, said he was a remarkable personality and was widely admired as a grounded leader. "Mulayam Singh Yadav served people diligently and devoted his life towards popularising ideals of Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia," he said in a tweet. The Congress mourned the veteran leader and said it was an irreparable loss to Indian politics. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said Yadav's unparalleled contribution to politics as defence minister and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh will always be remembered.
Born on November 22, 1939 into a farming family in Saifai near Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav spawned the state's most prominent political clan.

Lok Sabha Speaker to attend Mulayam Singh's funeral tomorrow
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has cut short his visit to Rajasthan's Kota and will attend last rites of Mulayam Singh Yadav, the secretariat of Lower House said on Monday.
Birla condoled the demise of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, and is returning to Delhi early from his busy schedule in his parliamentary constituency Kota Bundi, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said in an official statement.

Mulayam Singh's body reaches his ancestral village Saifai in UP
The body of Samajwadi Party founder and former Uttar Pradesh CM Mulayam Singh Yadav reached his ancestral village Saifai today evening. He will be cremated tomorrow. A convoy of 300 vehicles carried his body to Saifai from Gurugram's Medanta Hospital, where he died on Monday after a prolonged illness.
