One person was killed and five people sustained grievous injuries after a multi-storey factory building in Ludhiana collapsed on Saturday, officials said.
The incident took place in Focal Point Phase-8 area. Eyewitnesses said the entire locality was shaken by the collapse.
Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Jatinder Jorwal said a few people were rescued and shifted to hospital for treatment. Sources said five of the injured persons are in a critical condition.
The health department has been instructed to deploy medical teams and ambulances at the site until the operation is complete, Mr Jorwal said.
A team of cops from Focal Point police station and National Disaster Response Force personnel are conducting the search operation. The municipal corporation and fire safety department have also been directed to depute their additional staff there round-the-clock, sources said.
In a post on X, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said he has directed the administration to take stock of the situation. "A factory collapse has been reported in Ludhiana. I have asked the administration to immediately assess the situation. The rescue teams have reached the spot and started their work. I pray for the speedy recovery of those buried under the debris," he said.
