Mumbai airport to shut for 6 hours on Tuesdays

Mumbai: If you're travelling through Mumbai airport this week, you may want to check with your airline if your schedule's changing in anyway.

Starting Tuesday, the Mumbai International Airport will begin re-surfacing the area where its cross runways meet which may result in the closure of the runways for a few hours.

Closure will take place over the next 22 weeks so, 90 flights that take off and land on Tuesday have been cancelled.

Cancellations have been worked into the schedule by airlines and shorter runway will be made available to those airlines that want to take off and land on that day.

Since international traffic accounts for 16 per cent of the cancellations, the closure will coincide with the time the airport handles least amount of traffic.

The plan to re-surface the runways at India's second busiest airport was announced a few months ago. Since then, airport authorities have been in touch with airlines on how they intend to complete the re-surfacing work.

One of the runways has been shut and under maintenance for the past one month.
