Mumbai airport: Tuesdays mean huge changes

Mumbai: For six hours today, the runway at the Mumbai Airport will be partially closed from noon to 6 pm.

The special Tuesday schedule for the runway was introduced last week.  It will be effective every Tuesday for the next 21 weeks.

The runway is being closed for reconstruction.  Between 1 and 5 pm, a third of the main runway is made available to airlines.

Smaller aircraft can operate in this sort of space.

All airlines except Spicejet and Indigo will operate their flights on Tuesdays.  However, flight schedules have been altered. Roughly half the flights that operated on Tuesdays between noon and 6 pm have been cancelled.

All national and international airlines have been informed about this.  Airport officials say they consulted airlines and other stakeholders for six months to come up with this plan.

Last week there were delays in arrivals once runway operations returned to normal at 6 pm because of the backlog of flights.
