Mumbai:
The provisional post-mortem report on Faiz Usmani, the man who died after questioning by police in connection with Wednesday's Mumbai blasts, is out.
The report says that Faiz had a heart attack. The post-mortem report also says there was a blood clot in the brain; the hospital had said his blood pressure levels had shot up to 250/140 triggering excessive bleeding in the brain.
The post-mortem report confirms there were no injury marks on Faiz's body. Earlier, a CT scan done in the hospital where he died had already said death was natural and due to hypertension.
Faiz's death had raised uncomfortable questions for Mumbai Police after his family alleged that he died after being tortured by the police.
"Bhai was sitting at the shop and Abbu was eating food when they came and asked for Abba. He came down quickly and around 5-8 people took him away. They said they were taking him to Chembur. Then they came home to take Ammi, they said Abbu was admitted to the hospital. His condition was very critical, there was no action at all," said Faiz's son, Azeem Usmani. But the police deny the charge that Faiz was tortured during interrogation. They say he was suffering from hypertension.
"Faiz Usmani was brought for questioning yesterday. But he was not feeling well. The police themselves admitted him in the hospital. There is no question of torture as he was questioned hardly for an hour. He was having problems of hypertension for quite a long time. He was on medicine also and he had not taken medicine for 3-4 days. That's what has been revealed after initial enquiry into this. But only the post-mortem report can clearly say why the death has occurred and we'll wait for the post-mortem report," said Nisar Tamboli PRO, Mumbai Police.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Crime Branch officials are being questioned by the state CID in connection with Usmani's death after the state government ordered an inquiry.
The officials were quizzed for over two hours on Sunday. They will be summoned soon for recording their detailed statements.
Faiz was the brother of alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Afzal Usmani who is currently lodged in jail for his role in the 2008 Gujarat blasts.
Afzal Usmani is believed to be an operative on the Indian Mujahideen (IM) and was arrested in 2008 by the Mumbai Crime Branch. He had provided cars in the 2008 Gujarat serial blasts case.
