Mumbai policeman Sachin Vaze -- arrested in connection with the Mukesh Ambani explosives scare case -- was taken to the Mithi river in Bandra East by investigators today to recover evidence that he allegedly tried to destroy. Under his direction, divers recovered a hard disk and number plates of a car which were dumped in the river.
Vaze -- who was initially in charge of the explosives investigation -- is being questioned by the National Investigation Agency, which is looking into the case now. The Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad has also accused him of being involved in the death of Mansukh Hiran, a Thane-based businessman, who owned the vehicle in which the explosives were found.
This afternoon, divers recovered a series of objects from the river -- including a laptop, a CPU, two number plates that read MH20FP 1539, and a hard drive. The investigators are yet to disclose how the objects are linked to the case.
On Thursday, the NIA had told a special court that Sachin Vaze had a considerable amount unexplained of ammunition in his house. Sixty-two bullets have been found in his house, which are unaccounted for.
"Only 5 of the 30 bullets given for his service revolver have been found. The accused is not telling where the rest went," the agency had said.
Investigators have said that Vaze and Mansukh Hiran had met on February 17, when the cop was handed Vaze the keys to the SUV.
Later, Mansukh Hiran had claimed the vehicle was stolen.
Hiran, a 45-year-old auto parts dealer, was found dead near a creek near Mumbai on March 5. He was reported missing a few days before that.
The investigators said they have taken blood samples of the accused for DNA test.
