Mumbai: The 22-year-old photojournalist who was assaulted and gang-raped in Mumbai on Thursday, is being treated by an all-women doctors' team and recovering well, the Jaslok hospital has said.

The girl, who has impressed everyone with her bravery and spirit, occasionally watches TV and is eager to return to work, say sources.

"I want to go back to work as soon as possible," the young survivor tells her family and everyone who comes to visit her at the hospital. An intern with the magazine for a little over three months, she said she really wants to complete her project.

She had earlier said, "Rape is not the end of life."

Hospital sources say she had not asked for an all-women doctors' team  - it was doctors who wanted to make her feel comfortable.

Her family said all she wanted was for her attackers to be punished, so that she could move on without fear of being targeted by the same men.

A large contingent of policemen has been posted outside and inside the hospital, who are working two shifts to protect her night and day.

Her family, friends and colleagues are also keeping constant vigil, said the hospital.

In an incident that brought back horrifying memories of the brutal Delhi gang-rape, the photojournalist was gang-raped at the abandoned Shakti Mills compound in south Mumbai where she had gone on assignment with her colleague. Five men held a broken beer bottle to her head and took turns raping her, after they tied up her colleague with belts.

Later, she and her colleague went to the hospital, and based on their detailed accounts, all five accused were arrested within 70 hours.

"The patient's condition has significantly improved as she is much better today. She is interacting with her family members as well," said Dr Tarang Gianchandani, acting CEO and medical director of Jaslok Hospital.

The girl, who suffered external and internal injuries, had a minor surgery on Friday.
