Mumbai oil spill: Probe blames Khalijia?
Mumbai: Nearly a month after two cargo ships collided off the Mumbai coast causing a massive oil slick, an inquiry has found MV Khalijia - the ship that was grounded - was to blame for the accident.

The probe by the Director General of Shipping is yet to be submitted to the Shipping Ministry but NDTV has access to the report. (In Pictures: Mumbai oil slick)

The report says that MV Khalijia entered the navigation channel at the wrong time and at the wrong angle as a result MV Khalijia occupied almost the entire length of the navigation channel and the Captain of MV Khalijia contacted the Captain of MSC Chitra only two minutes before the accident.

Interestingly, on August 7, the owners of MSC Chitra, were asked to pay full compensation for the August 7 collision. (Read: Mumbai ship collision: MSC Chitra owners told to pay up)

The MSC Chitra and Khalijia had collided on August 7 at the mouth of the Mumbai Harbour. The Khalijia had been at the harbour for over a fortnight for repair work when the collision took place.
