Mumbai:

In the season's heaviest rains on Tuesday afternoon, Mumbai experienced three hours of chaos. Rains that started on Monday night gathered into heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Island City: 31.5 mm
Suburbs: 145.7 mm

The sea swelled in high tide; Mithi river that flows through the city crossed danger levels.

All modes of transport came to a standstill and it will be a long ride home.

Mid-afternoon, a large part of Mumbai's suburbs was pushing through water especially in low-lying areas, subways, under flyovers and main arteries that connect suburbs to the island city.

Worst affected were the people of the slums that are always the first to get flooded.

Talking to angry people about their houses in water.

By about 4.15 pm the high tide ebbed, rains settled down and Mithi waters receded.

By then Army rescue teams had also reached the banks of Mithi.

In about 100 locations water is being pumped out from roads. Traffic has been diverted accordingly.

Many people did not go to work fearing delays instead turned rain reporters for NDTV.

But for thousands of those who did, it's a long journey back home. Since the 26/7 deluge, the city tends to panic during heavy rains.

But at 146 mm, it is nowhere close to the 944 mm of 2005 that had crippled the city.
