With continuous rainfall all through the night, people in several parts of Mumbai on Tuesday woke up to severe waterlogging. The weather department has sounded a red alert for today and tomorrow for extremely heavy rain in Mumbai. Education officers have been told to keep the BMC schools prepared if any emergency situation arises and people need shelter. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that extremely heavy rain will occur at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts of Maharashtra on August 4 and August 5. Ratnagiri district is also expected to receive extremely heavy rain on August 4, while Paldhar district is expected to receive extremely heavy rain on August 5.

Boat capsizes off Gorai coast, 2 fishermen missing
Two fishermen are missing while 11 were rescued after a boat capsized around 12 kilometres off Gorai beach in north Mumbai this afternoon, the police said.
The boat, Lucky Stat, with 13 fishermen on board, got caught in heavy rains and capsized, a Gorai police station official told news agency PTI.
"Men from another boat in the vicinity jumped in and managed to rescue 11 of the 13 on board Lucky Stat. However, two are still missing and search operations are continuing for them. The vessel has also not been found," he added.

230 mm of rainfall was recorded in Mumbai: Official
The downpour started around 7 pm last night and slowed down around five to six am this morning, says Iqbal Singh Chahal, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner.
"In the 10-hour downpour, 230 mm of rainfall was recorded in Mumbai. The Mithi river had swelled up in the morning because of the heavy rains and went above the prescribed danger mark of 27 meters. In the morning it had gone up to 34 meters and we had started to evacuate people in the low-lying slum areas. The water levels have come down to 24, so we have ceased evacuation for now," he adds.

The local trains, a lifeline for Mumbai's 20 million residents, have been stopped in the city and all offices in the city, except emergency services will stay closed today. The financial capital and a few neighbouring district are on red alert for "extremely heavy rainfall" today and tomorrow. Apart from Mumbai, the alert has been issued for Thane, Pune, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts of Maharashtra.
