New Delhi:
Disturbed by the communal violence in Muzaffarnagar that killed at least 40 people, the Supreme Court today issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre, seeking their reports on the relief and medical facilities being provided to the victims of the clashes.
The top court was hearing the petitions filed by the victims of the clashes and the Supreme Court Bar Association.
The riot victims, represented by former Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam, argued that the top court should ask the Centre to discharge its obligations under Article 355 of the constitution.
Article 355 asks the government to ensure its citizens are protected against any internal disturbance or external aggression, and is considered a prelude to the President's Rule.
Mr Subramaniam also wanted the court to stop the politicians from making provocative speeches following the riots.
Senior Advocate Rajeev Dhavan, representing the Uttar Pradesh government, told the top court that the situation in Muzaffarnagar and the adjacent areas is improving.
After hearing the arguments, the court directed the Uttar Pradesh government must work with the Centre to ensure that all persons stranded are taken to places of safety and provided all required assistance till they are rehabilitated at their respective places.
The top court said it will examine the compliance reports filed by the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh state on September 16.
