Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today rejected a comparison with Narendra Modi as he promised justice for those affected by the communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar town, in western Uttar Pradesh.
Stung by allegations that the 'Gujarat violence' was being played out to polarize voters in Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh said, ""There was no justice in Gujarat but justice will be done in UP. I have never done the politics of caste and religion."
38 people have been killed since communal clashes erupted in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday last.
The Samajwadi leader was responding to the comments of Union minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Ajit Singh, who lashed out at the Samajwadi Party government over clashes in Baghpat, a constituency he represents, on Wednesday.
"If the government itself tries to polarize voters, then I can only say that Mulayam Singh is trying to be the Modi of Uttar Pradesh," said Mr Singh, referring to the 2002 riots that lacerated Gujarat and continues to shadow the Modi government, accused of doing nothing to stop the largely anti-Muslim violence.
Ajit Singh was stopped from visiting Baghpat today and arrested briefly.
In Baghpat's Kirthal village, members of two communities clashed on Wednesday after the police tried to conduct a peace meeting. The mobs also threw stones at cops, injuring a constable.
Forty people were arrested and the police found AK 47 cartridges, bullets and a pistol from some homes. Police reinforcements along with teams of the Rapid Action Force were also rushed to the area notorious for its organized crime gangs.
The Samajwadi government led by Mulayam Singh's son Akhilesh has come under severe attack from various political parties as well as within, for failing to check the communal violence in Muzaffarnagar.
