'Narendra and I': First Names and Friendship on PM Modi's Australia Visit

'Narendra and I': First Names and Friendship on PM Modi's Australia Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott take a selfie at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Melbourne: "Narendra and I," said Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott several times.  Hours before he left Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a selfie with Mr Abbott at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground, signed by both leaders and said, "With my friend @TonyAbbottMHR at the MCG. "

The personal warmth that Mr Modi and Mr Abbott shared during the former's Australia visit, the first by an Indian PM in 28 years, was also reflected when Mr Abbott said at the reception he hosted at the famous 161-year-old Melbourne Cricket Ground or MCG, that  Modi is like a "brother."

Mr Abbott used PM Modi's first name at a joint press conference after summit talks, while emphasising how the two countries were expanding their cooperation in various areas. He did so on several other occasions while referring to the determination of the two leaders to work together to help strengthen relations between the two countries.

The Australian PM had urged world leaders to speak from the heart rather than a script at the summit of the Group of 20 industrialised and major emerging economies at Brisbane. "If we could use first names, that would be good as well because, whatever disagreements we might have, it helps if there can at least be personal warmth amongst us," he said.

When Mr Modi arrived at the G20 Summit venue, he gave Mr Abbott a hearty hug - the two leaders had last met in India when the Australian PM visited in September this year.

Before PM Modi began his address to lawmakers in the Australian Parliament today, Mr Abbott said he was determined to correct the situation where no Indian Prime Minister had addressed the House.

He said leaders of several countries have addressed the Parliament but no Indian leader has done it. "I am personally delighted that this has been been corrected," he said.

Mr Modi evoked laughter when he said, "I'm the third head of the government you are listening to this week, I do not know how you are doing this! May be, this is Prime Minister Abbott's way of shirtfronting you."

Mr Abbott had threatened to "shirtfront" Russian premier Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Brisbane; it's a football term used in Australia for a head-on shoulder charge to an opponent's chest.

"My memorable visit to Australia ends today. A new relationship has begun," Mr Modi said while speaking at the MCG.

At the end of his four-city Australia tour, PM Modi gifted a memento to Australia signed by World Cup winning Indian captains and himself.
