Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with his mother, to mark his 63rd birthday
Gandhinagar: Narendra Modi, celebrating his first birthday as the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate for 2014, did not miss the chance to target the UPA government as he went through a flurry of events in Gujarat on Tuesday.

"For the first time, the common man is waiting for elections. They are getting restless. It should happen fast so that the government is uprooted," said Mr Modi at a felicitation this evening.

The 63-year-old also took a dig at the missing files linked to 'coal-gate' - or illegal allocation of coal mines to private firms at losses of crores to the government.

"Some time back, somebody told me about the missing coal files. I said the government only is missing," the Gujarat Chief Minister said.

Mr Modi spent the day collecting blessings and good wishes, even as his party eyed political dividends from a series of outreach events. It began with a drive to recruit one lakh Muslim youth from across the country. Then in Mumbai, Muslims linked to the BJP's minority cell gathered at the historic Makhdoom Shah Baba mausoleum or Mahim Dargah to "pray for Mr Modi's long life." This was followed by a cake cutting ceremonies by Muslims linked to the BJP.

Mr Modi appeared to bask in the attention. "I never used to celebrate my birthday but had to succumb to pressure from people," he said.
