Top BJP leaders pose during the party's Chief Ministers' conference at BJP headquarters in New Delhi

New Delhi: Narendra Modi is meeting top BJP leaders from across the country in Delhi today to sharpen his party's strategy for the general elections due by May and make it more "aggressive and effective."

The BJP is looking to build upon it spectacular showing in the recently held Assembly elections in four major states; it swept three states and was the single-largest party in the fourth, Delhi. Mr Modi, who is the party's prime ministerial candidate, had noted that it had won 407 of the 589 seats for which counting was held on December 8.

Today's meeting will prepare ground for the BJP's Council and Executive conclave to be held in January, party leaders said. Top leaders are in town for the meeting, including Chief Ministers, the entire Parliamentary Board, state units presidents and other office-bearers.

While combating the Congress remains the main focus of the BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party or AAP phenomenon in Delhi is expected to be discussed at length. The BJP was prevented by making a clean sweep of the Assembly elections this month not by the Congress, but Arvind Kejriwal's one-year-old AAP, which won 28 seats in the 70 member Delhi assembly, restricting the BJP to 31, five short of a majority.

At today's meeting, leaders will discuss how the BJP can reach out to voters from all sections and age groups using traditional methods of campaigning as well as making effective use of social media, rallies and workshops.

"The public rallies of our Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi have been a success in several places. There are plans to hold more rallies than were planned earlier. Such rallies of Modi will be held till February and then the party will get into election mode when some of our leaders will address up to three to four rallies daily," a party leader said.
