Chandigarh: Impressed by their project on human colonies beyond the earth, US space agency NASA has invited six students from a Chandigarh-based school to its annual International Space Development Conference in Florida.

A would be human colony in space designed by Pragya, Kirti, Kanika, Aditya, Shreya and Abhishek-- class Xth students of the Dikshant International School here - was selected in NASA National Space Settlement Contest for the year, 2009 and the students will now get a chance to rub shoulders with top scientists at the May 28-31 conclave.

The colony meets all the needs of the occupants and looks like a simulation of our home, the earth.

Keeping in mind that the human inhabitation in space will require access to food, space, construction materials, energy, transportation, communications, life support, simulated gravity, and radiation protection, colonies will be situated in the earth orbit, school director Mitul Dikshit said.

Earth orbit has substantial advantages-- the major being that as it is close to earth it can be reached in hours as compared to Moon and Mars.

Dikhit said the reason for exploring and thinking of setting up space colonies is that they would ensure the survival of humans, should earth become inhabitable because of climate change or because of threats from near earth objects such as asteroids.

While designing the space colony, students had a chance to study physics, mathematics, space science, environmental science, and many other disciplines.
