Visakhapatnam: Navy Chief Admiral RK Dhowan today commissioned the erstwhile Shipwright School (SWC) and premier training establishment of the Indian Navy as INS Vishwakarma at the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) in Visakhapatnam.

Mr Dhowan said the INS Vishwakarma would enhance the Navy's in-house design and maintenance of capabilities and it would upgrade to a premier establishment.

"The Shipwright School would go a long way in transforming the Indian Navy to a designer's and builder's Navy in keeping with the 'Make in India' vision," Mr Dhowan said.

Highlighting the Navy's commitment and resolve for 'Make in India', he mentioned that the Indian Navy has technologically advanced warships, which have been designed in house by the Navy's own Warship Design Organisations and constructed by the Indian Shipyards.

The Naval Chief also emphasised on quality professional training the bedrock on which our warships, submarines, and aircraft are able to effectively carry out their onerous tasks.

SWC was established at INS Shivaji in 1941 for training shipwright artificers of Indian Navy and was subsequently shifted to Naval Barracks, Mumbai in 1943 and later it was shifted to Vizag in 1981 as a dedicated training establishment.

Senior Naval officers were present on the occasion.
