Naxals kidnap govt officials in Jharkhand

Latehar: Naxals struck again in Jharkhand, this time in the Latehar area where they kidnapped four top government officials. The officials were Additional Collector Shravan Sai, Executive Engineer S Bhengra, the officer in the dairy department A K Sinha and an Assistant Engineer, whose name was not immediately available.

The officials were, however, released later in the jungles surrounding the Manika block. The officials are in the custody of the Latehar police now.

The officials were part of a team that was looking into the implementation of projects under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in various blocks of the district.

Top police officials of the state have left for Latehar.

The kidnapping comes weeks after the Jharkhand government struck a deal with the Naxals for the release of a Block Development Officer (BDO). The deal had critics worried of more such kidnappings by the Naxals to force the government to meet their conditions.
