New Delhi: The Congress today hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the widely condemned one-day ban on NDTV India, with Rahul Gandhi calling it "shocking and unprecedented".
"Detaining opposition leaders, blacking out TV channels- all in a day's work in Modiji's India. NDTV Banned-shocking and unprecedented (sic)," Mr Gandhi commented on Twitter.
The main opposition party said the government's action smacked of "authoritarianism and intimidation".
Senior leader Digvijay Singh suggested that all newspapers and channels should "show courage" and "go off air and not publish" on November 9 in solidarity with NDTV.
Congress leaders questioned sarcastically whether this was PM Modi's promised "achhe din" (good times). The Congress posted on its official twitter handle: "Mark of authoritarianism is when political leaders are detained by police and news channels are banned. What Rights will Modi ji come for next?"
