NDTV impact: Pondicherry port allocation under scanner

Pondicherry: It's a big boost for activists and Pondicherry citizens who had been opposing the building of a new port joining hands with NDTV's campaign to save India's beaches.

However, the Supreme Court had ruled against them and given the go ahead for the project.

Now a team from the Ministry of Home Affairs that audited the project has found major problems in the manner in which it was awarded to a private company and has submitted a plea asking for the judgement to be recalled. The next hearing will be in January.

Activists have been opposing the deep sea port on environmental grounds, saying it would destroy the beach in Pondicherry and would hinder the fishing community.
