Around 50 people were rescued from the waterfall current in the Sukhdar falls near Mirzapur district.
Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh:
Nearly 50 people, including children and elderly, were trapped in the middle of a waterfall for hours on Monday in eastern Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district. All the tourists are reported to be rescued.
Locals from nearby localities had gone to a popular picnic spot near Sukhdar falls in Mirzapur, 286 km from the capital city of Lucknow. While several people were cooking by the banks of the water body, many people started bathing in the water body.
"The colour of the water changed and it turned muddy. Suddenly, there was a strong water current," said Mr Harikrishn, a villager. Villagers said there were six to seven men who were stranded. The trapped picnickers were rescued by the locals and police by late Monday evening.
A man was seen jumping into the waters to rescue his cow. Three cows have been swept away in the water.
Several parts of Uttar Pradesh received heavy rains this monsoon with major rivers including the Ganges flowing above the danger mark at some places. Mirzapur, set by the Ganges, witnessed heavy rainfall this monsoon. Last month, a python strayed onto the road near Mirzapur's Lakhaniya Dari waterfall after heavy downpour.
Two weeks ago, close to 5 people had died in another waterfall after which the district administration had stopped people from going near the water bodies in the region for the next 15 days.
