Need better coordination in UPA, says Praful Patel: Highlights

NCP chief Sharad Pawar and his deputy, Praful Patel met with Sonia Gandhi and the PM today at Dr Manmohan Singh's residence to discuss new coordination mechanism between the allies.

Mr Patel addressed the media after the meet. Here are the highlights:

  • SharadPawar met Sonia Gandhi. He stressed that there should be bettercoordination and UPA should present a united face amongst the people- whereallies feel represented.
  • We needbetter coordination, regular coordination to  work out a united face.
  • Similarly,we need proper coordination in Maharashtra.
  • In the past few days, we have been seeing media reports.
  • From day one, we have been saying we want better coordination and all of us should be factored into the process of running the govt and coalition.
  • PM, Sonia Gandhi agreed what we have said was valid and we have evolved a common statement.
  • It has been decided to set up a coordination mechanism to ensure cohesive functioning.
  • UPA allies will meet at least once a month.
  • Coordination machinery needed to ensure smooth functioning of Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra.
  • The PM reiterated that Mr Pawar was an experienced leader and there was a need to work together.
  • Sharad Pawar and I will continue to remain a part of the govt; and we will discharge our duties.
  • In fact, in today's meeting, we also discussed the drought situation that faces the country.
  • UPA's coordination committee has been accepted by UPA chairperson, and the PM. What will be the composition, NCP can give its suggestions. Whether and how other parties will be involved, that's up to them.
