New militant trick: Throw arms over border

Jammu: Militants in Pakistan are changing tactics to facilitate infiltration. They are now throwing arms and ammunition across the border fence for their supporters in India. Not to be outdone, the Border Security Force plans its own set of counter measures.

A consignment of three Chinese pistols, 3.5 kg explosives and currency notes worth Rs 3.5 lakh was seized by the BSF near the international border in RS Pura recently. Sources say the haul was meant for militants on the Indian side. And that this wasn't the first time militants camping in launching pads in Pakistan had thrown weapons across the border.

Earlier this year, the army siezed a large consignment of ammunition in Poonch Sector.

The BSF is taking specific measures to stop cross-border firing and infiltration, but with these new tactics employed by militants, it needs a completely new strategy.

The security force plans to do just that during its winter border management strategy.

Inspector General BSF AK Sarulia says: "We have taken specific measures in our deployment on the international border to keep the situation at the border under control and to maintain peace"

The BSF says it foiled eight infiltration attempts on the international border in 2009, and with a new strategy in place, it hopes to plug the borders better.
