New Delhi: The names of high courts in Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai will change to catch up with the times, the government said today.

"From now on, Calcutta High Court will be known as Kolkata High Court, Bombay High Court as Mumbai High Court and Madras High Court as Chennai High Court," said Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

He made the announcement just after the Modi cabinet expansion, in which 19 new ministers were sworn in.

The government plans to bring a bill in Parliament to rename the high courts.

The Calcutta High Court was the first in the country and one of the three to be set up in the country along with the high courts of Bombay and Madras in 1862.

Years after these cities were rechristened in the 1990s to address demands for a return to their original, pre-colonial era names, many of their institutions retained their name, mostly for practical reasons.
