Panaji:
The newly inaugurated prison in Colvale village of Goa will be soon operational after India Reserve Battalion (IRB) takes over the outward security of this jail, a top official said today.
The Prison authorities have already finished all the inspections certifying it to be fit to transfer the prisoners.
"I will hold meeting in next two days to decide the exact date of shifting the prisoners," Goa's Inspector General of Prison Elvis Gomes told PTI.
He said IRB, a wing of Goa Police, which looks after the outward security of the jail is yet to shift its base at Colvale.
IRB will take over the outward security of this 300-inmate prison which was inaugurated by state Chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar on May 30.
"Once IRB shifts, we will be able to take the prisoners there. The internal security is looked after by the jail guards," the IGP added.
Jail authorities in Goa will be shifting prisoners in Goa after vacating the century-old Aguada prison.
The IGP said that the entire Aguada jail would be closed down after prisoners are shifted from there.
The new jail is spread across an area of 2,25,034 square metres and is built at the cost of Rs 107 crore.
It is called as correction home keeping in mind the guidelines of National Human Rights Commission, Mr Gomes said.
To start with, it will accommodate about 300 inmates which include all the 122 inmates of Aguada jail, inmates of judicial lock-up at Mapusa, and some inmates of Sada sub-jail.
The new jail has a 15-bed hospital, a dental unit, a pathology lab and a pharmacy.
