Kolkata:
The Trinamool Congress has been calling for early assembly polls in Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has even set a month for it - October this year, instead of May next year. But the issue seems somewhat clouded. At a rally in Kolkata on Friday one Trinamool leader said President's Rule and early polls were inevitable, but Mamata dropped a bombshell. She will not demand the imposition of Article 356 in the state.
In the Trinamool, Mamata Banerjee has the last word and in line with her claim in the last couple of days about Assembly polls in Bengal in October, a party MP revealed a plan.
"If the political situation in the state under this state government is disturbed, as it is today, and the Centre dismisses the government and uses Article 356 and holds polls within 55 days then that decision does not need to be passed by the Lok Sabha," said Sudip Bandopadhyay, a Trinamool MP.
Sudeep's strategy clearly depends on imposing President's Rule. But soon after he spoke, Mamata turned his plan upside down and declared she is not going to demand imposition of Article 356.
"I have not said dismiss the government. I have not asked for 356 yet. The CMP is lucky, I haven't asked for it. But then I won't ask for 356 because, why should I give the medicine of 356 to someone who is already on his way out," said Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee.
The left has already said Bengal can't have Assembly polls in October unless President's Rule is imposed. Now, that Mamata has ruled that out the call for October polls could be less promise, more threat.
