All schools and colleges in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu have been closed till Tuesday after fresh spells of rain.
Close to 2500 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas of the district.
Meanwhile, a third flood alert has been issued in five southern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Madurai, Theni and Ramanathapuram.
Storage in the Vaigai Dam is reaching its capacity after heavy rain in catchment areas. The entire inflow of 4900 cusecs is being let out into the Vaigai river.
Authorities have begun evacuating people living in low-lying areas.
