Nine dead in stampede at religious function in Jharkhand

Deoghar: Nine people have died and many have been injured in a stampede at a religious function in Deoghar in Jharkhand. Eight of those killed were women.

The stampede took place in Satsang Ashram in Deoghar, where thousands of devotees had gathered to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Saint Thakur Anukul Chand.

"During morning prayers at 5 a.m. hundreds of devotees gathered in a congested hall. More than 15 people fainted," a police official said.

Officials say most casualties were due to suffocation, and all the victims were senior citizens.

"We had trained volunteers. Unfortunately during prayer time, the volunteers could not control the crowd. We have set up an inquiry," Rahul Purwar, the District Magistrate of Deoghar told NDTV.

The injured were taken to a local hospital where they were given first aid. All of them, barring one, have been discharged.
