New Delhi:
On Wednesday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will be sharing a common stage while addressing a convention against communalism.
Left parties are organising a convention against communalism where 14 political parties have confirmed participation. Among them are Janata Dal United, Samajwadi Party, Biju Janata Dal, Asom Gana Parishad and Deve Gowda's Janata Dal (Secular).
But is this is the coming together of all non-Congress, non-BJP start towards a third front?
Nitish Kumar, addressing his party, today said, "We will take appropriate decision at the right time... participating in Left rally does not mean joining any front."
The sentiment was echoed by Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav. "This is only on the issue of communalism and should not been seen as any front or an alternative," he said.
While regional parties like JDU and Samajwadi Party have come closer to the Left, many of the parties have still adopted an ambivalent attitude.
For example, the Telegu Desam Party or TDP, that has always associated with the Left. But interestingly, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu has maintained a studied silence on the convention.
"We contacted him and he said he will get back to us but he has not got back to us so far," says Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) leader.
