No alliance, no bungalows: Nitish Kumar government threatens to evict BJP ex-ministers

Long-time allies turned enemies BJP and Janata Dal-United (JD-U) are now squabbling over ministerial bungalows in Bihar.

Bihar BJP leaders who lost their ministerial jobs after a break-up with the ruling JD-U in June, may soon be thrown out of their official bungalows. In eviction notices served on Tuesday, eight ex-ministers were asked to vacate their spacious homes by next week.

"This is just dirty politics - this notice reeks of the arrogance of (Chief Minister) Nitish Kumar," said Prem Kumar, who, ironically, used to be the Urban Development Minister and among the more high profile members of the Nitish Kumar cabinet.

"I have no love for my bungalow, I hardly stay here. I will vacate within 24 hours if I am given another home - you can't give such notices without first arranging accommodation," Mr Kumar said.

All 11 BJP ministers were dropped after the JD-U walked out of the 17-year alliance over the elevation of Narendra Modi as BJP's campaign in-charge for the national elections due by May.

An officer in Bihar's building construction department said the ex-ministers were served eviction notices in keeping with the rules, which say that the bungalows have to be vacated within a month of leaving the cabinet.

'In this case, a grace period of an additional month was given before notices were served," said the officer.

Only two ex-ministers have not been asked to quit their homes yet - former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi and Nand Kishore Yadav - they have asked to retain their official homes as Leaders of Oppostion in the state legislative council and assembly.
