No alliance with Congress for civic elections, says Karunanidhi

No alliance with Congress for civic elections, says Karunanidhi
Chennai: The DMK will not partner with the Congress for the civic elections in Tamil Nadu, scheduled for October across the state.

DMK chief M Karunanidhi said this is not a sign of growing tension with the Congress, with who he partnered for the recent state elections.  The combination proved to be disastrous, and Mr Karunanidhi was voted out as Chief Minister.

"Local body polls are fought on local issue," Mr Karunanidhi said, "That's why the DMK is contesting them alone."

The DMK is a senior partner in the UPA coalition at the Centre, where it lends the clout of 16 Lok Sabha MPs.

However, there has been considerable frisson over the arrest of Mr Karunandhi's daughter, M Kanimozhi, for her alleged link to the telecom scam.

The DMK's A Raja, who was Telecom Minister, has been arrested for masterminding the scam. Another DMK leader, Dayanidhi Maran, has been forced to resign as union minister because he too is being investigated by the CBI for the telecom swindle.
