No improvement in Basu's condition; PM, Pranab visit hospital

Kolkata: There has been no significant improvement in the condition of 95-year-old Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu, who is in hospital and suffering from acute pneumonia, according to a medical report on Thursday evening.

Ventilation, however, has been reduced to partial support and blood pressure stabilizing drugs have been reduced too. The vitals are the same as on Thursday morning.

A bulletin released earlier in the day by doctors on the medical board monitoring the condition of the former Bengal chief minister read: "By yesterday evening, Mr Basu had shown some improvement. Today however there has been no further improvement in his condition. His blood pressure is fluctuating from time to time. Bronchoscopy was done yesterday and the findings did not suggest any change in treatment. Small amount of liquid food is being given by nasograstic tube."

Jyoti Basu's condition had been unchanged since January 1, the day he was admitted to AMRI Hospital with pneumonia. But he took a turn for the worse on Wednesday morning and had to be taken to the ICCU and put on a ventilator to relieve him of respiratory distress caused by the pneumonia.
